It is advantageous to included all known options such as different keel and rig configurations, maximum hull length and propulsion system options early in the design stage.

The design specifications received from yards building production boats typically include, size, type, general arrangement, performance level, preferred construction method and materials and a description of the systems and equipment to be incorporated into the design.
